MOVING

Moving Tips and Timetable

7 Weeks Before The Move
* Inventory your property and weed out the junk
* Organize a garage sale if you have items worth selling.
* Contact moving companies and get estimates with both the movers packing and your packing
* Make any personal travel arrangements; flights, hotel, rental car; for your trip.


5 Weeks Before The Move
* Select your mover, dates and cost.
* Notify the post office, magazines, credit card companies, friends and families of your change of address. The U.S. Postal Service offers a kit to make this process easier.
* Complete any repair work on your old home and arrange any service to your new home.


3 Weeks Before The Move
* Call utilities to schedule disconnection of gas, water, electrical, telephone, and cable TV on the day following your move.
* Self-packers should start packing. Remember: label the contents of all boxes.
* Organize critical documents: drivers licenses, auto insurance and registrations, copies of school records, copies of your medical record, including your dentist, veterinarian, vaccine-immunization records.


2 Weeks Before The Move
* Pack, Pack, Pack, labeling every box


1 Week Before The Move
* Mow your lawn.
* Transfer prescriptions to a drug store in your new town.
* Draw a floor plan of your new home and consider where you'll locate and place furniture. Mark and draw specific pieces of furniture on your diagram. If a piece of furniture wont fit, dont take it with you.


1-2 Days Before the Move
* Pack a suitcase of clothes for the move.
* Movers arrive to start packing process.
* Empty and defrost refrigerator and freezer with disinfectant and let them air out. Put baking soda inside to keep them fresh.
* Arrange payment to the moving company.
* Empty your safety deposit box. Plan to take important papers, jewelry, cherished family photos, irreplaceable mementos and vital computer files with you.
* Leave your forwarding address and phone number for your new homes occupants.


Moving Day
Old Home
* Remove linens from beds and pack in an open firstbox.
* Review all details and paperwork when movers arrive. Accompany van operator to take inventory. Verify delivery plans.
* Give the home a final cleaning.

New Home
* If you arrive before the movers, tidy up your new home. This is a good time to line cupboards with shelving paper, if you plan to do so.
* Unpack your car.
* Check to make sure utilities have been connected and follow up on delays.
* Confine pets to an out-of-the-way room or consider boarding them overnight at a local kennel.
* Plan to be present when the moving van arrives.
* Confirm presence of valuables and important documents
* Review inventory sheets as the items are unloaded. A second person should direct movers.
* Once items are unloaded, unpack only what youll need for the first day or two. Give yourself at least two weeks to unpack or organize your belongings.
